This Week's Question

"How do you deal with the natural tension that is a result of wanting to devote your life to God and wanting to be in a Godly relationship with 'mutually exclusive compatible companion'" -A.

Verge Answer
Dear A.,

If I understand your question, there needn't be any tension between the two desires you expressed, devoting your life to God and a mutually exclusive companion, as long as the companion is devoting his or her life to God and the relationship is heading to marriage. The more contentious question has to do with timing. For example, if a couple is mutually attracted to each other, but knows that pursuing a relationship will take them off of one or both ministry paths, the relationship will need to wait. That is unless one is willing to submit his or her vision to the other until the time is right for that vision and ministry to take priority. Our culture (of extensive formal education, separation from parents and extended family) is not kind to young loves—those who may want to pursue marriage before establishing a career. Economic and social pressures are not in your favor. But as the Bible says, “it is better to marry than to burn in lust for one another.” Decide whether relationship or ministry or a combination of the two is your immediate priority. One thing is certain, if you trust in the Lord, lean not on your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him, he will make your paths straight.
